Career Tip of the Week
Stop wasting your cover letter by repeating what is in already on your resume.
One of the most common mistakes I see people make is treat their cover letter as just another version of their resume.
Your cover letter is the opportunity to:
Personalize your application to that company so they know that you’ve (1) done your research and (2) are genuinely interested in the job/why
Use stories to go deeper on a few relevant experiences you have to that job. It makes it easy for the reader to picture how you get things done, and how you would take on the job they are hiring for.
Sound like a human. This may sound odd, but the number of recruiters I’ve spoken to who are seeing cover letters that are clearly written using AI. As I’ve said the last few weeks, it isn’t a bad thing to use AI to help create applications more quickly, but making sure you still use a human touch is a great way to stand out!
I’ll be going over my cover letter templates and other best practices tonight! Be sure to sign up for our workshop below 👇👇👇
🔈 Free workshop: no cap, just cover letters
Do humans actually read my cover letter? Do cover letters even matter anymore? Writing cover letters are overwhelming, how do I even start?
We have designed an interactive workshop tonight, June 10th 6:30PM CT to give you tips and templates about cover letters. For free, always.
Overheard from a recruiter
I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!
I was fully automated out of a job. My former company is using AI to run the first half of the vetting process, which means candidates won’t talk to a person for the first three rounds of the application process.
This company isn’t the first, and it won’t be the last of companies who will attempt to fully automate recruiting. Here’s why I am NOT a fan of this:
AI evaluations are going to have a problem being biased. If you saw my email newsletter last week, you know that we’re seeing snippets of this elsewhere already.
Just because someone is a good “test taker” doesn’t mean that they will do well on the job. As this particular person pointed out, they have seen people get perfect scores on the AI evaluations, but perform really poorly once they get hired.
An interview is meant to be a two-way conversation. If a candidate isn’t talking to a person until they are deep into the application process, they don’t have an opportunity to decide if the company is the right fit for THEM until they have sunk in a ton of their own time too.
Have you encountered a fully AI-run application process yet? What was your experience?

Take a break
Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!
48 hours in Spain for a gay wedding during Pride month? No sweat.
Lies - it was all sweat, and I came back with a brutal cold, but it was 100000% worth it.

how cute is my scandinavian scarf?? iykyk
