“How soon after I have an interview should I follow up?” -Anonymous
At the end of an interview, it’s always worth asking about the timeline (e.g. “when should I expect to hear back on next steps?”). You can also add it as a question in a post-interview thank you email which, yes I still fully stand behind.
Otherwise I recommend 10-14 days for a follow up!
Overheard from a recruiter
I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!
Ask specific questions if you are genuinely curious about company culture
We talk a LOT about “company culture”, and part of the challenge is that this concept can be vague, but how it manifests is very specific. It’s important to reflect on what a company culture fit means for YOU. Here are some specific questions to consider:
Is socializing outside of work a common thing that happens on this team?
What DEI policies are in place at your company, and is there budget specifically put towards those initiatives?
When was the last time you took PTO and did you truly log off, or did you stay engaged even while away?
How often do you hear from the leadership team?
Is there a culture of celebrating wins with the broader company? What does that look like?
Start by reflecting on what elements of company culture truly matter to you. At the end of the day, there isn’t going to be one place that checks EVERY box. So focus on what is most important, and ask those tough but fair questions!
