Career Tip of the Week
If the tariff headlines are giving you anxiety as a job seeker, I don’t blame you. We may not know exactly how it will shake out, but here are two things I’m paying attention to:
Companies that have been hit hard by tariffs are going to be struggling to figure out how to cut costs, raise prices, and rethink hiring all at the same time.
Consumers will have less money in their pocket to spend on the necessities, let alone fun things, which will impact a lot of businesses too.
SO if I were job searching right now, here are three things to think about:
While job searching will always be a bit of a numbers game, it’s important to stay strategic. Focus on where you have existing connections, skills, etc. We know that “mass applying” is less likely to yield results, especially as more people use AI tools in their search.
Expand the types of jobs you are considering. If you are tunnel-visioned on a specific type of job, industry, or company and haven’t received an interview in more than four months, you might be shooting yourself in the foot.
Consider in-person or hybrid companies. This may not be an option for everyone, but they are a lot less competitive than fullly remote companies. If you are able to, I would encourage you to look into cities that are “smaller”, “lesser known”, or “less fun” because there’s less competition in those markets!

Overheard from a recruiter
I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!
No job is perfect, especially your first one. But they can all be growth opportunities.
One of the biggest emotional tolls that job searching can take on us is the pressure to find the “perfect job”. One that we excel in and checks every box, from salary to mentorship opportunities.
Spoiler alert - that job does not exist. Particularly when you are starting out, there is so much you still don’t know about what you like, how you work, what kind of environment is the right fit, etc.
My advice, particularly in a crazy market, is to root yourself in 1-3 high-level goals or priorities. For example, maybe your next job is one in which you get to do more data analysis. Or the next one is that you work with a great manager. Or it’s just that you have decent hours!
Beyond that, stay open, and know that every step is a step forward (even if it isn’t perfect)

Take a break
Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!
If you’re in Texas, you know that our state sent us one last cold front just to keep us on our toes. 40 degree weather didn’t stop me from zealously supporting all the small businesses at the first ever Sugar Rush festival hosted by ATX BREW CREW and This Week ATX. My haul consisted of bark tea, a matcha latte, coffee beans, and cannolis (which later gotten eaten by my dog when we were out).
