Each week, I’ll answer your most burning career questions. Have a question? Ask me here.

“I’ve noticed that there aren’t a lot of entry-level marketing jobs out there… am I imagining that?”

I don’t think you are imagining that. As someone who started her career in marketing, what I personally observed is that in times of economic uncertainty or big company shifts, marketing teams are often the first ones impacted since they aren’t directly tied to revenue (although, I would argue that is short-sighted!).

There are also more tools and ways to outsource marketing than ever before, which means that you can get that capacity and skillset for a lot cheaper than you could in previous years.

Finally - marketing is often done on an “as-needed” basis. That means, rather than hiring a big cohort annually of marketing analysts like you might see in sales, banking, and other fields, marketing jobs will open up when there is a specific need (e.g. a new client joins, a team member quits, etc.)

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!

“The reason that you’ll see ‘remote’ on a job description but location requirements is because a lot of companies can only operate in certain states.”

- Recruiter

In simple terms, companies have set up entities in certain states in order to offer the appropriate salary, benefits, etc. As someone who has run multiple businesses… it’s a big pain in the butt. So for some companies, even if they are offering “remote” they can’t actually hire someone who works/lives anywhere!

So make sure to take a careful look at which states an employer is hiring from, even if the job description says “Remote”.
