“How do I find early-career jobs outside of just LinkedIn?” - Anonymous

In addition to checking out Forward’s job board (curated for early career jobs with salary weekly), I recommend that you:

  1. Go “company first”. Create a list of companies that you are interested in, and go straight to their company sites first.

  2. Check out venture capital/private equity websites. A lot of investors have a page called “portfolio companies”, which are just a list of companies that they have put money into. Some sites actually compile open job listings at these portfolio companies, but you can also use these lists to get inspiration of companies that are well-funded right now. Some of my recommendations are:

  3. Go to industry-specific job boards. LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. have become dumping grounds of every possible job and company, diluting the overall quality and reliability of these listings. I love using ChatGPT to get inspiration for new, niche job boards that have a more curated selection. (“Share ten job boards that post jobs related to media and entertainment. Do not include LinkedIn, Indeed, Handshake, ZipRecruiter, Monster”)

  4. Check out this comprehensive list of early career programs from Gorick Ng. He compiled a big list of companies that specifically have early-career programs. This is a particularly helpful resource if you are looking for your first full-time gig!

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!

Wanna know my FAVORITE networking hack of Summer 2025?

Love Island Season 7

I'm so serious.

Everywhere I went, I instantly had something to connect with people about. People would literally stop what they're doing and ask "Wait! Are you guys talking about Love Island?! 👀"

And your Love Island opinions tell me SO much about you as a person.

Networking is about connection, not just elevator pitches. And if we can connect over a shared love of Nicolandria, even better!

-Jaylyn Jones (original post here)

In honor of the reunion dropping last night (IYKYK), I wanted to share this post from university recruiter Jaylyn Jones that sometimes the best way to “network” isn’t to just have a perfect script and elevator pitch ready to go.

Networking can and should be authentic, and sometimes that means you DON’T just talk about work.

Just this week, I was speaking with someone who had been dealing with a series of personal and professional crises, and most of the time was spent talking about that. Because that was what was top of mind for them, and it helped me better understand how I might work with them in the future!

The only danger of this strategy is derailing the conversation too much by talking about how no one last night can take any real accountability!! (Again, IYKYK)

Take a break

Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!

Admittedly, one of my more problematic qualities is my fascination with true crime and murder mystery novels. To shake things up, I decided to read a classic from 1938 called Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.

If you are trying to change up your reading routine from fast-paced modern novels that have clearly been written for those of us with short attention spans… check this one out!
