Career Tip of the Week
Stop using LinkedIn, Indeed, and other “big job boards” to source opportunities. As I mentioned last week, it’s like throwing your hat into a bottomless pit. Focus on more curated job boards based on industries/roles you are interested in!
If you aren’t sure where to look, I used these two ChatGPT prompts and found them to generate some very helpful ideas:
“share ten job boards (excluding indeed, linkedin, monster.com, and ziprecruiter) that specifically list jobs related to marketing, social media, design, creative, and brand”
“share ten job boards that specifically focus on media, sports, entertainment, television, streaming, and other similar industries. do not include indeed, linkedin, monster.com, or ziprecruiter”
I hope this sparks some new ideas!
📣 You are invited to our next workshop “Personal Branding 101: craft and share your story to land jobs”
Are you trying to break into a new role or industry? Trying to get past your first round of interviews?
Learn how to build your career narrative AND tell your story in an authentic, high impact way.
Open to everyone, from career pivoters to recent graduates.
Join us live next week on March 25th, 6 - 7:30PM CT.
We want to hear from you. We’re planning the rest of our workshop series for 2025 and want to know what has been top of mind for you professionally.

Overheard from a recruiter
I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!
Unfortunately, we just don’t have the amount of internal training that I wish we had for new hires.
This is a common and frustrating thing that I hear from companies. Some companies have full learning & development teams, but many do not! As a new hire, you may not have a lot of support beyond the basics.
My advice is if you are applying to a company where this is the case to emphasize examples of when you have had to teach yourself a new skill, learn a new tool, or generally be scrappy.
For example:
In planning an event for my school organization, I wanted to lean hard on word-of-mouth referrals to boost attendance. I reached out to a few event planners who were alums of my school to ask for their advice, and they pointed me to a tool called ReferMe. I signed up for a free trial, watched several YouTube videos, and ran a fake referral program as a test. I was able to get up to speed quickly, and actually used it to fill the room with twice the number of people we initially planned.
Here’s why I love this story:
Follows the STAR method (situation, task, action, result)
Focuses on the specific steps they took to fill in a gap (reach out for help, trial/error, learning videos)
Closes with the impact that your work had in filling the room
Short, sweet, and to the point!
Companies that may be on the “scrappier” side will love knowing that you know how to take initiative and make things happen, even if you may not know everything day one.

Take a break
Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!
I’m realizing most of these posts are food centric, but when you’ve been away from Austin for ten days, what else do you want but a P Terry’s burger…?
