Career Tip of the Week

Curate your LinkedIn feed with more reliable information and inspiration!

Last week, Ang Richard and I shared a few of our favorite early career LinkedIn accounts to follow. We chose these because these voices are reliable, authentic, informative, and great examples of how you can build an online personal brand. Be sure to give them a follow if you haven’t already!

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!

We posted our internship on Handshake, but now that I think about it, I never once looked at candidates on Handshake itself

- Early career programs manager

This conversation was yet another example of the weird world of job boards. If you don’t know Handshake, it’s one of the most popular tool used by colleges and universities to manage career services and share jobs with students.

This particular employer admitted that they did post their summer internship on Handshake, but that the application itself directs candidates to apply directly to the job on the company website. She said she got inundated with messages from students, but never read any of them because she didn’t have the bandwidth.

In fact, she said most of the candidates they did end up hiring came from in-person career fairs on campus!

Another great reminder to use job boards to learn about jobs, but not to rely on them to apply. Go right to the source and apply directly on the company’s website! And if you DO have access to in-person events with employers and recruiters, be sure to take full advantage of those too.

Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!

Sometimes you need to walk an hour to drink a mid-tier matcha latte with your dog.
