Career Tip of the Week

Last week, we started talking about all things resume. Let’s keep that going by talking about the most important part of any resume: the actual content!

I’ve literally seen hundreds and hundreds of resumes, and I can quickly spot a “strong” resume. A “strong” resume is not necessarily filled with fanciest titles or name brand companies. In actuality, a “strong resume” showcases your experience AND the ability to tell your story that will be well-received by your audience.

Here’s a pretty standard bullet point on a resume:

  • Managed social media for an on-campus organization

Remember, the person reading your resume has no context… they only know what you tell them! So it’s important to hype yourself up by being really specific with your keywords and speaking to the impact of the work you did.

So try this instead:

  • Increased TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook engagement by 15% for the largest student organization on campus

Now, you’ve painted a clear picture of (1) what a big deal that job was (2) the tools you used which will show up in a keyword search and (3) how good you were at this job!!!

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!

Strategically applying for a job that isn’t necessarily “perfect” but gets you a foot in the door is a great move. Many companies would rather promote and hire internally, so don’t be afraid to play the long game

- Recruiter

I love this advice for early-career professionals in particular! When you are just getting started, a lot of your skills will translate across junior level jobs (e.g. sales, coordinator, marketing, operations).

In general, no job will ever check EVERY box. If you can find one that helps you move one more rung up the ladder of whatever career you want for yourself, you are doing well!

Finally, don’t take that job for granted while you are there. It’s great to be forward-looking, and have an eye to what is next. But the best way to make that next job a reality is to fully throw yourself into this one!

Take a break

Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!

I highly recommend an outdoor board-game afternoon! A few Sundays ago, our trio (including this cute dog) enjoyed a game of Hive.
