Career Tip of the Week

How should you reply when you get a job offer?

A few people in my life this week have gotten job offers which is very exciting! So I wanted to share a few best practices on what you should do when you finally get that offer (yes it will happen, I promise):

  1. You are not obligated to say yes on the spot! When they call or email you the offer, be sure to respond with enthusiasm and gratitude but you can simply say “I can’t wait to see the official offer letter come through so I can take a look and let you know if I have any questions!”

  2. An offer isn’t real until there is a real offer letter in your inbox!!

  3. You should not be afraid to negotiate. But here are a few best practices when approaching it:

    • Be prompt in your communications and coming back with anything you’d like to negotiate

    • Do your research on why you are making your asks (e.g. MBA students in Chicago working this type of job typically make 15% more)

    • Bundle all your negotiations together, don’t keep going back and forth with new requests

    • Remember that you can negotiate things OUTSIDE of salary (e.g. start-date, title, wfh dates, etc.)

A common fear people have is that they are going to “scare” a company away by negotiating. But if you are respectful, reasonable, and grateful, you will not! If a reasonable ask DOES scare a company away (I’ve never seen this), you probably avoided some major red flags.

🔈 Early Career Panel with Recruiters

Get a peek behind the scenes of how early career recruiters think about recruiting and nurturing early career talent like you in 2025.

This session is primarily for recruiters and talent professionals, but we wanted to help job seekers gain insight on what is happening on the other side of the interview table. No gatekeeping here 🙆‍♀

The panel is happening next Monday, July 14th 12 - 1 PM CT. For free, always.

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!

There’s still a lot of education to do with hiring managers on how to mitigate bias when hiring

- Recruiter

One of the most fascinating parts of working in the recruiting technology space is that we aren’t just thinking about how to make candidates’ experiences better. Or save time for recruiters. There are so many other people who shape how hiring happens!

I think of hiring managers who haven’t been trained in how to set realistic expectations when creating a job description. Or senior leadership who may not want to invest in enough training. Or even the larger cultural norms that have shaped the way we define what “success” or “qualified” looks like.

Don’t mind me, today is more existential than tactical! But I think it’s important to remember that the system we are ALL trying to navigate is deeply imperfect, and all we can do is our best.

Take a break

Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!

Nothing fun to share today, it’s been a pretty dark week here in Texas with flooding near Austin and other parts of central Texas, most notably Kerr County. Luckily, my family is ok, but so many others around us are facing some of the deepest devastation you can experience.
