Career Tip of the Week

If you are headed out for Spring Break (or just taking some well deserved down time), here’s what I would do if I wanted to set aside some time for the job search:

  1. Prioritize recharging and having fun. The job search is a grind and there’s only so much you can do if your tank is on empty!

  2. Use that space to take a full step back. It’s easy to get lost in the to-do list of resumes, cover letters, applying for jobs, LinkedIn messaging etc. It’s important to check in with yourself, and make sure you are on the right track. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

    • What has been working for me? What do I need to consider trying differently?

    • What kind of jobs have I been most excited about? Should I be prioritizing those more?

    • What kinds of jobs or industries have people brought up that I haven’t checked out yet?

    • Who have I not talked to in a while that I should reach out to?

    • Is my ‘elevator pitch’ strong? How can I improve it?

  3. Do some reading for fun! Like me, you probably have a backlog of podcasts, newsletters, articles, etc. on industries or careers of interest. Enjoy the process of just learning, and try and take the pressure of “what does this mean for my applications” out of it.

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!

The biggest thing early-career professionals struggle with is talking about their impact in a concise, quantified way

- Learning & Development Professional

Ok this isn’t technically a recruiter, but someone who works with a LOT of early-career professionals who are growing in their first job. After talking with managers, she shared that the biggest area for improvement is being able to communicate to stakeholders (aka people that you’re working with or for on a project).

One easy and actionable framework she recommends is sharing:

  1. What you are working on

  2. The specific steps taken

  3. The quantified impact of your work

The reason I wanted to bring this up today is because if you are job searching, this formula is exactly what you are trying to accomplish in your application. Managers are not only looking to see your skills + experience, but HOW you communicate that on a resume, in a cover letter, during an interview, etc.

My advice is to focus on the delivery as much as the content, because that is also what will make you stand out in the job when you get there!

Take a break

Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!

Sometimes you and your dog are sick in the same week, so you have to eat chocolate ice cream in the middle of the day. Cause I’m an adult, dammit.
