Ask Mariam Anything (AMA) #11
Each week, I’ll answer your most burning career questions. Have a question? Ask me here.
“How do I know when my resume is ready??”
I hate to break it to you… but there is no such thing as a perfect resume. If the essentials are in place (impactful bullet points, readable, non-generic summary, etc.), then everything after that becomes extremely subjective!
I’ve reviewed hundreds of resumes for my startup, nonprofits, and employer partners and helped people land roles at MongoDB, Obama Foundation, GLG and more.
Check out my resume essentials here.
Overheard from a recruiter
I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!
“We don’t expect you to know everything in an interview; it’s more about your thought process.”
Here’s an example! Let’s say they ask you “how would you improve our product?”
You obviously don’t work at the company (yet!) so don’t know all the behind-the-scenes information powering the tool or what customers have to say.
But, if you’ve done some market research, played with the tool yourself, or done some deep digging on what people have to say online, you could probably answer the question like this:
“Your product wants to solve x, y, and z. When researching what users had to say and after playing with the tool myself, I noticed that the tool is achieving [insert example] but could do more to address [insert example], particularly given that your competitors are doing [insert example]. These would be my next steps!”

Take a break!
Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!
Happy November everyone! As we’re being thrust into holiday season, I feel like this month is a great reminder to think of what I’m grateful for. This past weekend, I went to a free gratitude journaling workshop that helped me realize the 3 main things I’m grateful for this season: my healthy and active body, my family close by, and having three friends that I can call on speed dial if I need anything.
📝 Some gratitude journaling prompts:

Thanks for showing up this week! We appreciate you. See y’all same time next week!
