Hey y’all! Mariam from Forward here 👋

We’re emailing you because at some point this year, you connected with us for early career job search help.
We’ve been asked everything from “what do you think of hiding key words in white font on my resume” to “how do I find jobs that actually reflect the experience level I’m at??”.
SO we wanted to make it easier to help you by collecting jobs, toolkits, and workshops all in one weekly email!
We know that the internet is filled with junk advice, fake job postings, and general despair, so we hope that this email newsletter is one place you can count on each week to be a positive resource ✨
We want to ensure these emails don’t get lost in your spam!

Create a job search strategy for 2025
It’s a weird time of year for job searching… hiring will slow down going into the holidays, which is a great opportunity to take some rest if you are able to. It’s also a chance to take advantage of that “pause” to create a plan when everyone comes out of hibernation in 2025.
I’m hosting a free virtual workshop on how to create a job search strategy on Dec 11 from 6:30-8 pm CT, including:
Identifying your “must-haves” and “dealbreakers” for your next role
Mapping your current network (you have one, I promise!)
Brainstorming roles/industries you are a competitive fit for
Creating realistic weekly goals in your job search
There are limited slots available, and it’s first-come-first serve!
Overheard from a recruiter
I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!
FYI - these aren’t direct quotes, but a summary of a longer conversation!!
“Most of my best hires don’t come out of top schools or people who have a bunch of fancy internships. It’s people who have scrapped together different jobs, and worked unusual jobs like running a gym. It’s people who I know are not afraid to put themselves out there and make things happen.”
I hear this one pretty often, particularly when it comes to business development and sales jobs. It’s the soft skills and life experience that say a lot more about the energy and persistence you will bring to the job, and that is what this recruiter in particular cares about.
What does this mean for you? If you have work experience that you think is “not relevant”, but has given you people skills, don’t shy away from it. You can bring those stories to life.
For example, if I did run a gym, here’s how I would speak to my experience:
In my resume, I’d share the number of customers I worked with daily and how satisfied my customers were
In my cover letter, I’d share a story of when I had to deal with a challenging customer and another story of how I brought in more people to the gym
In my interview, I’d clearly state in my introduction that my experience at the gym gives me the customer service, organizational, and outreach skills required for the job
