“How can I stand out my first week on a new job?” - Seeking solutions from San Antonio
First, congrats on the new job!!
Here are three things I would do to really make a positive impression:
Send a note the Friday or so before your first day just letting your new boss know how excited you are, and ask if there is anything that you need to do, keep in mind, read, etc. before you come. It shows initiative, and is a great way to set a right tone early.
In the first week, be sure to reach out to important stakeholders (your boss can help you figure out who is who) to set up 1:1s. They may not happen that first week with the busy-ness of onboarding, but good to get those on the calendar ASAP.
Ask your boss and/or team what products, documents, etc. you should play around with the really familiarize yourself with the company and customers. Again, you will likely get plenty of onboarding around this, but nothing beats you digging in yourself.
💌 Have a question about career, finances, or navigating your 20’s?
I would love to hear from you!!
Overheard from a recruiter
I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!
I worry about hiring people with no experience, because we don't have the professional development set up to help them
People often get frustrated when they don’t see entry-level jobs at companies, but just a reminder that that may actually save you a lot of pain and frustration. Getting to a company that DOESN’T have the onboarding, professional development, learning opportunities, or engaged managers that I talk about above can actively work against you.
The right company is one that sets you up for success, and good companies are self-aware enough to know if they are doing that.
