Career Tip of the Week
Ahhh the dreaded resume. Last week, I mentioned a conversation that I had with several recruiters about the fact that there are no black and white rules when it comes to resumes (or really, anything to do with the job search).
But there are a few guiding principles to consider! This month, I’m going to be sharing some resume best practices (you can see our full toolkit on that here).
Here are some basic thoughts to get you started:
A resume is not meant to showcase everything you have ever done. It’s an opportunity to take 30-60 seconds (max) of someone’s time to share the most relevant and high-impact experiences you have to offer
Every corner of your resume is precious real estate. Make every word count. A good way to know if you are doing this is to ask yourself: “could anyone apart from me write this?”
As I mentioned last week, one page is best practice if you are early in your career. But if you have a lot of relevant experience, and you would do yourself an active disservice to remove stuff for the sake of space, go to two pages
After a certain point, resume advice (including what I’m offering today), is going to be a little subjective. There IS such thing as too many opinions… in my opinion

We hosted Forward’s first networking gym last Friday!
The Forward community was partnered 1:1 to connect and expand one another’s networks. Gyms are low-pressure & live virtual sessions to exercise your career skills where you can apply the tools and tricks you've been learning about.

Forward’s Inaugural Networking Gym
To be the first to register for our 2nd Networking Gym next week, join our Forward Discord, an online community for early career professionals.
Overheard from a recruiter
I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!
YOU CAN increase your chances of being seen by a recruiter if you have the proper keywords added specific to your niche so that the system can find you based on a set of filters.
However..... this is NOT an ATS (Applicant Tracking System).
It is a resume search platform.
Last week, I had a wonderful chat with Eve Clark, a long-time recruiter and career coach here in Texas. She shared a recent post on LinkedIn about the fact that most job seekers are not taught the basics of how recruiting software works, and what tools are being used to evaluate them. So let’s break it down!
An ATS (or Applicant Tracking System) is a tool like Greenhouse or Workday (you likely see this branding on a lot of the applications you submit). It’s basically nothing more than a database. There’s nothing particularly fancy to it, and nothing there to “game”. It just organizes candidates that recruiters engage with from other places like networking events, referrals, job boards, etc.
Recruiters go in themselves to manage this ATS, and personally review the resumes that get loaded in. It isn’t a magical AI robot deciding who gets an interview!

Take a break
Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!
If you are looking for a new way to entertain, let me put you onto my friend’s Cafecito parties. She makes custom syrups at home, everyone brings baked goods, and suddenly a whole Sunday afternoon is gone to great music, great vibes, and slight bloating.

How helpful was this email newsletter?
Thanks for showing up this week! We appreciate you. See y’all same time next week!
