Ask Mariam Anything (AMA) #6

Each week, I’ll answer your most burning career questions. Have a question? Ask me here.

“I know the market is crazy, but I hate my job. When do I take the risk and jump ship??”

Oof yeah, I can confirm that things are definitely a mess right now. And as I have said to many people recently: I am #teamjobsecurity

General rule is that it’s best to look for a job when you already have one. This can look like:

  1. Actively applying to roles in a similar role/industry (pivoting is particularly challenging right now)

  2. Networking to keep your finger on the pulse of future opportunities

  3. Upskilling through courses or independent projects

  4. Building an online professional profile highlighting your skills, wins, and perspectives

If you are grappling with whether or not you can stick it out in your current job, these are the questions I would ask myself!

  1. How much risk can I afford to take right now? Particularly when it comes to loss of income, or even benefits. Do I have a back up plan?

  2. What is making me feel drained at the end of the day?

  3. Are there mentors or other people I can reach out to for help?

  4. Am I fundamentally burnt out or do I just need to take some time off to recharge?

  5. Are there boundaries I can set at work that I haven’t (e.g. saying no to certain extra work, not going above beyond on certain things)

  6. Are the things wearing me down things that can be changed? Is there a way to have a conversation with my boss? What would that look like?

  7. Is there a different role at the company I could consider?

  8. Is the problem the people I work with?

Depending on the answers to the above questions, I would weigh the pros/cons of putting yourself back on the market. Particularly given how long it takes to land something new!

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!

Make sure you read the job description before you go into the interview

- Recruiter

Ok, I know this one is basic. But having experienced this quite a few times myself, I wanted to shed more light on WHY we keep repeating this advice

  1. Interviewers are often having the same conversations in the different flavors over and over. If you use that time to ask more thoughtful questions or go beyond the job description, you’ll be more memorable!

  2. We don’t expect you to know everything day one, especially as an early-career professional. But showing you have taken the time to learn the basics going into the conversation makes a big difference.

  3. Take the job description at face value, particularly when it comes to things like salary, location, visa sponsorship policy, benefits, etc. I do find that when it comes to early-career opportunities, that there is sometimes room to flex on the qualifications section (i.e. you check 5 of the 8 boxes rather than all of them). But if you know that you absolutely want to work remote, and the job is five-days-a-week in person… believe that job description!

Take a break

Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!

Sometimes you need to order a bunch of Korean snacks and watch Kpop Demon Hunter with your friends and your dog. And by sometimes… I mean regularly.
