Ask Mariam Anything (AMA) #10

Each week, I’ll answer your most burning career questions. Have a question? Ask me here.

β€œIs it better to try and network with people who have jobs that are of interest to you or people who are more senior, but harder to get a hold of?”

When you are first networking, my advice is to start with the people you are most likely to hear back from. Often, that means people who are close to your β€œlevel” or peer group. Trying to network with a VP or someone senior may not be the best place to start because:Β

  1. They are less likely to respond to a random LinkedIn message or email

  2. It’s a bit more β€œhigh stakes” so I recommend waiting until you feel more comfortable and confident with your networking!

If you CAN get an intro to someone more senior, then definitely take advantage of that! So for senior folks, I would focus on getting warm intros (aka someone connects you to the person). But I wouldn’t focus all your cold outreach there.Β

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!Β

❝

β€œI read every resume that comes through.”

- Early Career Recruiter

Keeping it short and sweet this week. For those of you who are convinced no one is reading resumes - a lot of recruiters still are!!!! So when you are writing a resume or cover letter, assume there is a human on the other side, not an AI bot like the internet keeps telling you.Β

Take a break!

Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!

After a stressful week, going outside for a hike helps me get out of my head. Especially as the weather in Texas is finally cooling down. Even if it is just a 5 mins walk, I highly recommend it.

butterfly garden!

Thanks for showing up this week! We appreciate you. See y’all same time next week!
