Career Tip of the Week

Don’t bother with the “hiding the keyword in white font on your resume” trick!
A human is still reviewing your resume.

I recently saw one of my mentors on LinkedIn posted that they caught dozens of candidates that had hidden keywords in their resumes in an attempt to “beat the ATS.” This is a very tech-forward company that has access to all the latest HR and recruiting tools, but ultimately, a human is still responsible for deciding who moves forward in the process.

So keep that in mind when you are thinking about your own resume strategy!

🔈 Free workshop tomorrow: how to match your resume to the job description

This isn’t your basic resume workshop.

We’ve been hearing from our job seekers that once they have a solid resume, it’s difficult to match their resume to the jobs they’re applying for. So we got you!

We have designed an interactive workshop tomorrow Wednesday, May 28th 6:30PM CT to teach you how to better tailor your resumes to your dream job. For free, always.

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too!

One of the quickest ways to damage your reputation is not handling multiple offers the appropriate way

- Head of Early Careers

I know multiple offers is a GREAT problem to have, but it is still extremely tricky to manage. And, as this particular leader said, it’s caused a lot of challenges when they hire early career talent. Particularly when someone backs out of a job last minute, essentially denying the spot to someone else whose intentions were a better fit!

Here’s some things to consider:

  1. An offer isn’t an offer until it is in WRITING (and I don’t mean an email, always ask for an official offer letter!)

  2. You can create urgency without showing your whole hand (e.g. “I’m really excited about this opportunity! I am in the process of multiple conversations right now, but y’all are my top choice right now. Do you have a sense of when I would be hearing about a final decision?”)

  3. Let them know if you need more time, but again, you don’t have to show your whole hand if you don’t want to (e.g. “I’m so excited about this offer! Can I have until Thursday to get back to you with any questions and my response?”)

The biggest thing to keep in mind here is that you are trying to balance being timely (ideally, this back and forth would happen over a matter of days, not weeks or months), protecting yourself, and also giving companies an opportunity to step up.

There’s no perfect formula here, and while you don’t necessarily “owe” a company anything, keep in mind that it’s in your best interest to maintain goodwill with a recruiter or hiring manager for the future!

Take a break

Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!

Before an extremely hectic summer with our upcoming pilot (launching tomorrow 🥳 ), I wanted to take some quiet out in the countryside. If you haven’t explored small-town Texas hill country, I highly recommend it (despite the heat that is about to knock us all on our butts).
