“I’m feeling so burnt out on the job search, and want to take a break. But then I feel really guilty for doing that, and feel like I’ll miss out on opportunities if I let myself stop. What do I do??”

Take a break. Whatever that means for you. That could be taking a day off, a week off, a month off. Everyone’s situation and what they need is different. I would take into account your financial situation and your basic living needs to make the decision.

But I can tell you from experience, that you are not creating opportunities for yourself if you are submitting half-assed applications, going into a networking call unprepared and tired, or letting your eyes glaze over when reading your hundredth job description of the day. 

Give yourself that break, and let yourself come back recharged. Careers in general are a marathon, not a sprint. And the job search process is no exception!

Overheard from a recruiter

I’m having conversations with recruiters, hiring managers, and other talent decision-makers weekly, and want to share tidbits of what I’m learning with y’all here too! 

“My hiring managers are taking fewer risks these days.”

- Recruiter

This comment was in reference to hiring candidates who seem great, but have less direct relevant experience. Hiring managers are feeling the heat to “get it right” with their new recruits, particularly in this economy. This isn’t the case everywhere, but I’m definitely feeling the shift towards people being more risk-averse than in the past. 

What that means for candidates is that you are better off focusing on roles and industries where you have more direct experience, rather than trying to pivot into something totally new. Particularly with how much strong, qualified talent is out there, companies are more likely to take the best “on paper” candidate, rather than take a chance on someone with a lot of fire and grit but needs more training.

To be clear - I hate this. But I want to share what I’m observing, particularly if you are someone who is trying to make a big change!! Making a pivot now is more difficult than the past, but it is not impossible.

Take a break!

Job searching is hard work. You deserve a break. Here’s how I took time to rest and recharge this week!

Sondra here, I’m in San Francisco this week for some alumni events and fun. To re-acclimate to any city, I love to go on a walk to familiarize with my surroundings (and find the nearest convenience store for that one thing I always forget).

Here is your encouragement to go outside! Get your steps in! Even if it is just 5 minutes, science has shown that moving your body regulates our nervous systems (which are hijacked with stress, especially for job hunters).
